Cruise - Day 8 - 10 Sep 2010

Another perfect day at sea – beautiful weather and smooth seas. No sight of land today as we sailed across the Gulf of Carpentaria...though I did get somewhat excited to see that we were not alone in the world when a container ship passed us by.

Our usual schedule of eating, gym, reading, eating, reading, bingo, reading, TV movie, eating etc had an addition today – we also did the laundry! This was Gary's second foray into the depths of the on board laundromat which Gaz says is not for the faint hearted. With hundreds of passengers on each deck, there is one laundromat per deck with 2 washing machines & 2 dryers. Apparently fist fights are not unknown. There doesn't appear to be any system of reserving the machines in the order of arrival so you have to either stage a “sit in” (on the floor as no chairs are provided), or periodically return in the hope that you will luck out and catch a free machine. Gary has chosen the latter method and has been pretty lucky so far, though he says he had to use the “O'Shea death-look” when one particularly pushy septuagenarian on a walker arrived shortly after him and pleaded a prior claim. Needless to say, I am quite happy for Gaz to continue with this duty, and I think it would be detrimental to his mental health to deny him the challenge presented by the on-board laundry facilities – I am so thoughtful. Oh, and I forgot we also had bingo on the open deck, another disturbing alteration to our usual schedule. I didn't mind it as it meant I could play bingo in my bikini (a tactic to put off fellow competitors) but Gary proclaimed it not to his liking – the open deck bingo I mean...or maybe he DID mean the bikini!

We also chanced upon an ice carving (or was that ice sculpting?) demonstration. The fellow was very clever and I must admit I do marvel at these masterpieces that adorn the buffet daily. I think that sometimes it is a shame that they are not more prominently displayed, as I often miss them if I forget to particularly search them out.

Today I also stumbled upon some carved vegetable scenes that were in keeping with the Japanese Sushi theme today. They were fantastic...and I almost missed them!

Well tomorrow we are in Darwin – I'm really looking forward to it – I've never been to the NT before but have always wanted to. Although one day will surely not be enough, it's a start. The forecast is for 34 degrees and sunny...not surprising – I remember as a child being fascinated by that far away place called Darwin where it was always the same temperature, summer & winter, though I remember it as being 33 degrees. Well, that's global warming for you...

More tomorrow.

Hello again, all coffee'd up and ready to go again.
Have you ever tried to get into the shower in your clothes, then wash them as you wash yourself. The dry out in less than a day if you've got a small clothes line or just hang them up over the shower curtain?? It's more fun if you can do the washing together by using this method. I bet you'd be in tis Penny and you don't even have to ge near the laundy. Not that Lee & I have done this? or have we? As I get older, my recollections of some events become a bit misty.
If this doesn't work for you because of room in the bath or something, here's another suggestion. - Gaz, go for an early morning drinkies, then get into one of those white pool dressing gowns (that incidently look like a karate kimino), then wrap on a headband and a black belt around the kimino. That may because of your fierce stare and costume may just empty the room.
Now, about this deck bingo. I know you may well be sold on dibs, dabs & dollops but I'm sure that Gaz didn't like the outdoor idea of playing "boadr games". I know for sure that he wouldn't have minded the idea of the bikini (unless of course he was a bit worried about some of the other male "players" trying to get a sly "Captain Cook" at Penny???).
While on the subject of having a bit of a "deco", GAZ, for GOD's sake swipe Penny's camera when she's not looking and get to the next "Jacki Love Show". I know that all your "male followers" who would "LOVE" to see some pics of those legs that go right up to armpits. Oh Penny, this is definitely not to say we don't "LOVE" all the other great pics - kepp 'em coming.
I can't sign off without commenting on the great pic of the Ice & Vegie sculpting. It's really an ART. I clicked the pic, then zoomed in to max and had a look for Gaz in the crowd. It reminded me of a book I used to read and point with my kids. It was called "Finding Wally The Worm" or something similar - They all took turns to see if they could find Wally and always very proudly found him. No score for me on the ice carving pic. Gaz I'm sure must have not been there?? maybe at the bar??

OK, more on Day 9 post
