So, I could begin this post with a sardonic comment such as “Queensland. Beautiful one day, perfect the next!” But that would be churlish. I could say, “Why would a freakishly unseasonal rain bomb befall people whose windscreen wipers were crushed to a useless pulp by an inexplicable accident?” But that might be whinging. Maybe I just say, “Did I mention it’s raining?”
Our morning was spent doing not much in our cabin as we watched the puddles form outside. I did get a chance to finish my report and read my book so at least that was a positive. Kev rang to say that the plan was to drive to a Fairbairn Dam – it is apparently three times the size of Sydney Harbour and not too far outside Emerald. So, they picked us up at 1:30pm but in the intervening hours the rain had increased its intensity and the plan was abandoned in favour of directing the others to the place to vote and then wandering around the shops for an hour or so.
Kev was keen to replicate his famous Air Fryer Savoury Muffins,
so the boys returned early to our cabin to get them underway. Chef Kev did an
outstanding job with Kitchen Hand Gaz also performing admirably. Vicky was busy
cooking our dinner but everyone else gathered at our cabin for a cuppa, a
muffin or two, and to play a new game I had picked up at the shops called
‘Smart Ass’. I reckon that describes us all. We had a fun time playing that,
everyone dispersed for a short rest and then at 5:30pm it was time to battle
our way through the deluge to Wayne & Vicky’s cabin for pre-dinner drinks
and indeed dinner. At the last minute a reprieve in the form of an offer of a
lift from Kev up to Wayne & Vicky’s cabin was accepted gratefully. Did I
mention it’s raining?
We had a fabulous night at Wayne & Vicky’s. Vicky cooked a fabulous meal that was a pasta bake, but not baked, and it was accompanied by yummy bread and salad. The piece de resistance was the decadent choc coated ice creams – Kev and I chose to decline – me because I was full and Kev, well, Kev didn’t really want to decline but managed to stay strong. After dinner, Vicky pulled out her Women’s Weekly puzzle book that also has trivia and the battle was on! Boys v Girls. In a very bad run of luck, the boys got the easy questions, and the girls got the hard ones … I’m sure you get the drift of who won … and it wasn’t the girls. Wayne then found some more trivia and there was much hilarity as we called out our answers willy nilly. On one question Wayne was giving clues on an Abraham Lincoln quote and said that this thing we did today was stronger than a bullet. Marion looked puzzled and said, “Shopping?” Of course, Wayne meant voting, but we all agreed perhaps shopping does have the upper hand.
Plan is to try and get to the dam tomorrow. It’s still raining …
