Day 28 - Venice and Burano

We have been so blessed with beautiful weather! Only a couple of days ago it was raining here, flooding, with tourists tip-toeing across tables to escape the water swirling below…today we had blue sky and sunshine.

We left the hotel at about 8.30am and arrived at Venice after the usual boat ride at about 9.30am. This allowed us an hour and a half of sightseeing and shopping before we met the group again for a glass blowing demonstration at 11am. Wow – they are extremely clever! We were blown away by the lovely stuff there but managed to calm ourselves and not spend the thousands of euros they were asking for some very nice pieces…though we may have spent substantially less on a few trinkets for ourselves. Well, you can’t go to Venice and not buy some Murano glass, can you?

We then had a bit of free time so we browsed the shops again and then found a café where we enjoyed a yummy pizza. It was a tad pricey, but that is the standard in Venice and it did have Wi-Fi and a toilet – two essentials for busy tourists in a strange city.

Our next adventure was to re-join the boat and enjoy a lovely trip through the lagoon to the quaint fishing village of Burano – famous for lace...and fishing. Once again we hit the shops (though they were quainter than those in Venice) and then spent some time in a much cheaper (and quainter) café than the Venetian one. We had some yummy pastries and tea and then wandered through the (quaint) streets where every house is painted a different colour.

All in all it was a lovely day. Our trip back to Venice on the boat was amazing as we sailed towards the setting sun. The highlight of the day was definitely me rushing across to the other side of the boat to grab a great photo and stacking it, ending up sprawled in an ungainly fashion on the floor. Carly’s laughter was the only thing that managed to bring me back to my senses!

We ended the day with a very entertaining dinner at the hotel. One of our fellow travellers, Julie, had us in stitches as she told one funny story after another. And…there was mashed potato for the first time in weeks!
