Road Trip 2017 – Day 10 – Adelaide Hills

I awoke this morning to the sound of stampeding feet, a boom box, and a strident voice barking out instructions – ‘squats for 30 seconds and then back up the stairs!’ Yes, boot camp had come to town and was operating next to our cabin! For the next 40 minutes or so I was able to curl up with my book, warm and snug in my PJs and sparkle slippers while about 30 or so suckers sweated up a storm outside my window. Gary, of course, slept through the whole thing. After they had departed, I did manage to make it up the stairs to a monument and lookout which gave a great view across the caravan park and coast. Once was enough!

We had a big day ahead of us so took off about 10am with Kevin navigating our way through the Adelaide Hills while I drove, and Gary and Marion provided moral support. First stop was McLaren Vale where we stopped at the Tourist Info centre to get the drum on the best places to see. So glad we did – the lady there was very helpful! We first went to a winery that Kevin wanted to visit called Middlebrook Wines but it was closed for a function. The nice lady did send Kev away with one of those mini bottles as he was so keen. Then we went to Goodieson Brewery where Kevin enjoyed the tastings and bought some mixed samples. I listened in and found the info about the different beers quite interesting.

We had been advised that the Willunga Farmers’ Market was on in the morning so we high-tailed it there next and were able to pick up some awesome produce to make a Greek Salad tonight, including goats’ milk feta cheese, similar to the one we had the other night. Grabbed some fruit too – the strawberries smell fantastic – can’t wait to get into them.

Our next stop was Penny’s Hill Wines where Gaz and I bought a few bottles – I quite liked their Sauvignon Blanc while Gaz got a fortified wine, like a port.

Hahndorf, an historic town settled by German people in the early 1800s was next on our list. It was very pretty and bustling with tourists. We had a traditional German type lunch and then wandered the shops for an hour or so, finally finishing with an ice cream cone. By this time it was 4pm and still 33 degrees!

We were getting a little weary, but I pressed the troops on and we forged on to Mount Lofty Summit. Unfortunately it was a bit hazy, due to the heat I guess, so while we enjoyed the view, it could have been clearer. You do get a wonderful view of Adelaide and surrounds up there.

It then took about 40 minutes to get back to our spot here at Kingston Park, arriving a bit after 6pm, just in time for a well earned rest before we put together our epic Greek Salad.
