Ah, no alarm this morning such bliss! There was no rush as we were not due to leave until 10am. Our original itinerary included a trip to Glenrowan, but we all agreed last night that we have all ‘done’ Ned Kelly and we would be going over old territory – a sleep-in seemed a better option!
It was off to the local gourmet food region of Milawa, only a short drive from Wangaratta. As we drove into town, we saw a sign that said ‘Markets today’. That’s a good start … well, it would be … except as Maz said, ‘it was not a market’s boot lace!’ Never the less, we spent a little time there before moving on to some shops – olives, mustard, antiques – all offered some good browsing (and a little buying) in historic buildings dating back to the 1860s.
We then moved on to the Milawa Cheese Factory and some assorted shops and spent some more time browsing, tasting, and buying. I was getting a bit peckish so Gaz and I shared a pretty yummy chocolate brownie at the café there. We also checked out an art gallery there with ridiculously overpriced artwork. I’m convinced I could give it a go and produce similar work – maybe this can be my new calling!
Our next stop was Brown Brothers Winery where we were booked in to a 2pm tour. We enjoyed a light lunch first and then gathered for the tour.
It was just a small group of 8, after 2 were kicked off for not wearing the covered in shoes we had been told were a must. That was a bit awkward! It was a good tour of the various operations at the winery and outlined the history of the winery and the 5 generations of family that have run it since 1889. Then, of course, we had the wine tasting…
We finished our time there with some time on bean bags under shady oak trees, soaking up the atmosphere – very nice. Did I mention it was very hot? By this time it was 35 degrees! We finally managed to make our way to the car to drive back and when we arrived back 20 minutes or so later, the car said it was even hotter … 40 degrees!
After such a big day, we decided to do our own thing for dinner and spend a bit of time resting (yes I nodded off for a little nap) and packing for our trip tomorrow to Canberra.
