2018 Road Trip – Day 9 Queenscliff and Dromana

The alarm blasting at 6:30am was quite a shock – it was too cold to get out of bed! But we needed to leave on time so somehow we got going, packed the car and were actually a bit early leaving Ballarat. We enjoyed a pretty incident free drive along the Midland Hwy, passed by Geelong, and then headed to Queenscliff. Gaz and I found the Tourist Info place (always a sure place to find a loo) and got some good maps and brochures and then headed to Fort Queenscliff where we were due to do a tour at 11am.

We met Maz & Kev there and waited for our tour guide. Her name was Geraldine and she was 78! She was pretty knowledgable and gave us a good tour of the facility. It was good on many levels – scenery, history, geography – and was quite enjoyable. It was very windy and a bit cool, but not as cold as Ballarat!

Geraldine did very well avoiding the 110 school children who were also undertaking tours of the fort – that was an effort in itself.

After the tour we found a great bakery in Queenscliff where we feasted on gourmet pies and various vanilla slices. Did I mention that vanilla slices have become the dessert of choice and Kev & Gaz have decided they must be sampled at every opportunity. This was after an awesome one in Gundagai on Day 1 and we still haven’t found one to beat it yet. We may well die trying.

It was then down to the harbour to meet the car ferry and board for our trip to Sorrento on the Mornington Peninsula. (There was a slight detour because I mistakenly clicked on the picture of a train on google maps, thinking it was a ferry lol. I can confirm Queenscliff also has a train station). It was all smooth sailing (even for Gaz who did take a sea sick tablet just in case) and we spent a pleasant 40 minutes sailing across Port Phillip Bay before we docked and drove off at Sorrento.

It was then a short 25 minute drive along the bay to our caravan park at Dromana. It’s a good sized cabin and the park is directly across the road from the beach – great spot. I unpacked and Gaz went shopping. He found an IGA that apparently is THE best supermarket ever seen – Kev & Maz have confirmed this. I have heard nothing else for hours – rave after rave about this supermarket and it’s range of gourmet offerings. Marion says it rivals Harrods! I’ll have to check it out sometime. Meanwhile, I wanted to check out the beach – it was awesome!! Those little painted shacks, beautiful calm water, lovely sand, crystal clear water – perfect. I can’t wait to spend some time there.

We had bought some extra pies at lunchtime and shared these for dinner – quite a bit of wine, a bit of backgammon, and some planning for the days ahead. I think this will be a good couple of days – need an early night so we can pack it all in.
