2018 Road Trip - Day 5 Swan Hill Pioneer Settlement

I hadn’t been up long when I happened to glance out of the window and saw the most amazing sunrise. I quickly grabbed my phone and jumped out the front door of the cabin and snapped a photo. Within minutes the sky was grey and boring – I was so glad I witnessed the few minutes of magic!

As we had a bit of a drive today, we set off at 9am bound for Swan Hill, a bit under 2 hours drive away. The boys sat in the back, I drove, and Marian played ‘mum’. Within 15 minutes we heard the first “are we there yet?” And had to be very firm with them for the rest of the trip. No coffee when we got there unless they behaved. We played some classic car trip word games which wiled away the time. The trip was quite interesting, although the landscape is pretty flat. We passed Lake Boga which looked like a good spot – none of us had ever even hard of it.

When we got to Swan Hill we were surprised at how large the town is. We drove around looking for a café and ended up at Pioneer Settlement, where we were heading anyway. Because they had been pretty good, we did start with coffee and scones and then set off to explore the settlement. It is a bit like a “Timbertown” type place but was most enjoyable. Fairly quickly Maz and I lost the boys and checked out the displays etc, finally meeting up with them a couple of hours later. We took a ride on a horse drawn carriage as well as in a vintage car – both extremely enjoyable.

We then found a nearby café for lunch called Spoons, right on the river. Most enjoyable meal and location!

The trip home seemed somewhat shorter as we played a Hal Roach (comedian) recording which kept us laughing all the way home. Getting back at about 5pm, we grabbed some things from the shops ready for our turn to provide dinner. No one was very hungry so we planned toasted sandwiches which were just what was needed. Gaz had to be different – he had left over goulash on toast!

I’ve decided to try the Echuca Parkrun in the morning so planned for an early night. We leave tomorrow for Ballarat.
