Day 12 – Sorrento

After our late night we were all reluctant to get up too early but all had surfaced by about 8 or 9. Kev, Maz, Vicky and I headed out for a walk around the Martha Cove Marina, just down the road. We had a beautiful walk though it was cold and blustery. Kev, of course, found somewhere for a coffee.

Kev, Maz, Wayne & Vicky got all gussied up and they were off to Polperro Winery for a special degustation lunch with Russ & Sue. We had chosen to give it a miss as Gaz is not keen on eating a lot at lunch. That left us time to explore the coast on the way to Sorrento, our next stop. We took the coast road and enjoyed the scenery along the way. After locating our apartment and parking the car, we found The Vanilla Slice Café in the main street of Sorrento and thought ‘that looks promising’. How wrong we were! The prices were high, the food was below average, the service terrible and the staff very unfriendly. Let us just say we would not advise anyone eats there … ever! (Gaz made sure I warned you all).

After that disappointing start to our Sorrento experience, things looked up when we saw a bargain jumper at Gazman and snapped it up for Gaz. I’m sure it will come in handy as it has been pretty cold today (top of 18 degrees) after a top of 36 degrees yesterday.

We walked a little longer and then found a supermarket and grabbed some staples for a light dinner. After taking that back to the apartment we undertook the mammoth task of unpacking the car and dragging it upstairs  – so much harder than just pulling up at a house. The upside of the apartment if that it is right in the middle of the main street so it’s very central. The downside is the coffee table leg is broken, the curtains are dirty, the balcony is filthy, the screen doors to the balcony actually fell off (!), and the batteries needed replacing in the TV remote (this was worked out after an hour of Gaz shouting at the TV). The kitchen seems ok and we were holding judgement on the beds and showers until we actually use them.

While Gaz yelled at the TV, I discovered we had had a major disaster with a spill in one of our bags. Thankfully it was the ‘odds & sods’ bag so nothing major was damaged though I did spend an hour washing out bags and various other paraphernalia. Gaz & I then decided to go for a walk while we waited for Kev and Maz to get here. We set off towards the beach and both almost lost our hats multiple times – it was very windy! Not too much to see down there so we headed back into town and Gaz set off to get a cucumber that we had forgotten to purchase earlier while I went back to wait to let Kev and Maz in as they were on their way. Gaz returned with a big bag full of fruit … but no cucumber. D’oh! In the meantime I called Carly to wish her well as she headed off to see Taylor Swift in Sydney tonight!

Kev & Maz got here, unpacked their car, agreed about the shoddy apartment, Kev fixed the remote and the screen doors, then they set of to explore. We had an easy dinner when they got back – everyone made their own toastie or toast and then we settled in to watch a movie – The Old Way with Nicholas Cage, a western. It was corny but had a few good moments. Certainly had us laughing … oh, but it wasn’t a comedy … oh well. Kev then fixed our shower (he couldn’t believe Gaz carries a set of Allen keys on holidays) – I reckon Kev should invoice the joint. The handyman is coming at 10am tomorrow to fix the coffee table and we had to hold Kev back – he’s a Mr Fixit extraordinaire! Time to hit the hay at 11pm.
