Day 9 – Yarra Glen and surrounds

With another slow start determined for today it was nice to sleep in a bit and leisurely get ready for the day. I did another load of washing and managed to put a new black t-shirt of Gaz’s in with my white and pale pink t-shirts that are now a sort of greyish white and greyish pink respectively. I think we can safely say I have not mastered this electrical appliance! I even had time for a bit of a stroll higher up the hill behind our house and found some nice views.

It was then off to the nearby Yarra Glen Chocolaterie & Ice Creamery for a squiz. This was the place that was jam packed on Sunday afternoon with lines of people waiting to get in. Thankfully today it was much more civilised and we parked right near the front door and wandered straight in. Wow! What a selection! It is a real pity that we still have a couple of weeks’ travelling because otherwise I doubt I could have resisted all the delectable chocolates and other treats that were on offer. As it was, Gaz bought me a chocolate peanut cluster that was pretty nice and he had a small tub of ice cream and a single chocky with his coffee.

After a suitable period of salivating at the sight of these scrumptious treats, we headed off for Yering Station Winery where Gaz and I initially got lost looking for the Cellar Door but this was a good thing as it meant we got to see more of the winery and the great scenery than we would normally have. Deciding to have a wine tasting, Kev & Maz were served by John, a very pleasant and entertaining guy from Canada who is out here to see Australia. He said he’s heading over to Margaret River soon and was regaling us with all sorts of tannins this and fruity notes that so I’m sure he knows what he’s talking about. Kev must have been impressed as he made a purchase.

It was then on to Yarra Valley Dairy where we hoped to check out some cheese and maybe grab a bite to eat. Unfortunately, the café there had run out of bread so, after the obligatory coffee, we set off for Coldstream, only about 6 minutes away. Hmm – not much at Coldstream so we set of to Yarra Farm Fresh (fruit/veg) where purchases were made, and it was decided to just head home and grab a bread roll on the way. Gaz and I stopped at a patisserie at Yarra Glen and purchased a couple of rolls – thankfully it was only for us as they were not very nice at all and, dare I say, tasted suspiciously stale. Anyway, I was so hungry by this time (approaching 3pm) I would have eaten my arm!

We had a quiet afternoon at home while some rainclouds finally entered our realm. It was short lived though. An easy dinner of roast chook, salad, chips and left over curry was very yum. Then Kev & Maz took off walking and I followed soon after. All this eating! We took a break from cards and watched a little bit of TV and then off to bed ready for a travel day tomorrow.
