Day 3 – Bowral, Bundanoon, Gundagai, Holbrook, Albury

I woke to the dulcet tones of rain and was a little concerned about packing the car in the rain before our departure. No need. It was a short lived shower and by 8:30am we had packed the cars and headed towards the small village of Bundanoon. I recently learned that my great great grandmother, Emma Harriman, was the first person to hold classes for children in the town, even before the school was built in 1870. The Bundanoon Historical Society was very helpful and provided me with a Heritage Walk map with information so Maz & I took a stroll around town while the boys had a coffee (or two). Some interesting old places with lots of trains rumbling through town in the short time we were there. Maz and I crossed the tracks to see what was on the other side and almost got caught by a flying goods train that set the mini boom gates and flashing lights off when we were half way across. Fortunately we were nimble enough to make it to safety with … oh about 100m to spare.

We then continued through the picturesque back roads of the Southern Highlands before linking up with the Hume Highway and continuing on south. Gaz & I are listening to an audio book – the sequel to The Rosie Project, The Rosie Effect. Although I’ve read it before, I’m finding it very easy listening and a great way to pass the time. Before we knew it we were pulling into Gundagai where we stopped for a picnic in the park. More coffee for the boys and a stroll for me & Maz and we were once again on our way.

Our next destination was Holbrook where we went to check out the Woolpack Inn Museum, an old building with some interesting exhibits including lots of old wagons and things out the back in the yard. Gaz saw the “Watch for snakes” sign and decided to wait out the front for us to finish. By this time it was almost 4pm and time to find our Albury accommodation.

Another great house greeted us – nicely turned out and a full kitchen so I decided to make use of it as it was my turn to cook. Kev, Maz & I walked the 15 min to Woolworths where I stocked up on what was needed and left them to explore further while I high tailed it back to marinade the pork and prepare the vegies. By the time dinner was served I was very tired! Our original plan was to eat out tonight … but … Valentines Day. D’oh!

It was then another round of Euchre with Maz/Pen v Gaz/Kev, once again ending 1-1. It’s tight folks, only Day 3 and maybe a big call but it could go down to the wire!
